Conservation Work Party

Sunday 20 March 2022 From 10am to 3pm meet at SE801887 nearest postcode YO18 8JQ

Site: Butterfly Conservation Yorkshire assists in the habitat management of this important private site. This limestone grassland fragment is a key new potential site for Duke of Burgundy that is re-establishing in Pickering and was once resident on this site and has been seen again in Gundale in 2019 This small meadow with steep west facing slope in the middle of the wood has seen Silver Washed and Small Pearl Bordered Fritillary. It is very close to Yatts Farm with its abundant Dark Green Fritillary, Dingy Skipper and Marbled White. We will be carrying out scrub clearance to help improve the habitat and to encourage primroses.

Directions: In Pickering proceed past the railway station and continue along Undercliffe for 0.7 miles. Cross the level crossing and take Yatts Road. After 2miles and immediately after Yatts Farm go left into Keldgate Road for 0.7 miles After a sharp right bend the road becomes West Dike. Look for the footpath stile about 50 yards on the left and park safely on the verge (see arrow on map). Proceed along the footpath across the arable field and over the stile into the wood. The track curves northwards and slightly downhill and the small meadow is on your right( see circle in map)
